Why is the lifespan of photovoltaic modules as long as 25 years?

September 03, 2024

1.What are photovoltaic panels?
Photovoltaic modules (also called solar panels) are one of the core parts of photovoltaic power generation systems. Since single solar cells are fragile and easily corroded, if they are directly exposed to the atmosphere, the photoelectric conversion efficiency will decrease due to moisture, dust, acid rain, etc., resulting in damage and failure.

In order to ensure that photovoltaic cells reach the corresponding output power and extend the service life of photovoltaic cells, photovoltaic glass, EVA film, backplane, frame, junction box, interconnection strip, bus bar and other components are generally used to prepare photovoltaic cells into photovoltaic modules.

Photovoltaic glass mainly protects cells from corrosion and increases Battery life

EVA film function:Bonding batteries and photovoltaic glass, batteries and back films

Backplane is insulated, moisture-proof, UV-resistant, airtight, aging-resistant, and corrosion-resistant.

Frame is responsible for protecting the components and facilitating connection and installation.

Junction box function to lead out the busbars.

After preparation and assembly, the life of photovoltaic modules can reach more than 25 years.

2.Photovoltaic module manufacturing process

Specific process flow of photovoltaic module manufacturing can be divided into: welding stacking, lamination, EL testing, framing, junction box installation, cleaning, IV testing, finished product inspection, packaging, etc.

Equipment involved in the manufacturing process mainly includes: automatic sorting machine, stringing machine, busbar welding machine, laminating machine, edge trimming machine, EL tester, framing machine, junction box equipment, cleaning equipment and IV tester

When manufacturing photovoltaic modules, the first step is to weld the interconnection strips to the main grid line on the front (negative) side of the battery, and then weld the front and back electrodes of the surrounding battery cells together through the interconnection strips. Then the battery strings after welding are stacked together with photovoltaic glass, backboard materials, etc.

Then the laid photovoltaic modules are placed in the laminator, vacuumed, heated, melted and pressurized, the battery glass and backboard are tightly bonded together, and finally cooled and solidified.

After the solidification is completed, it is necessary to check whether the solar cell modules have hidden cracks, fragments, cold welding, broken grids and other abnormal phenomena

After the test is qualified, the gaps between the aluminum frame and the battery module are filled with silicone, and each frame is connected by corner keys

Finally, pass the lead wires in the module through the back plate and connect them to the internal circuits in the junction box with silicone.

The finished photovoltaic modules can be put into use after cleaning, power testing, appearance testing and packaging.

3.How to judge the quality of photovoltaic modules from the appearance?

High-quality photovoltaic modules can be identified by appearance. Generally speaking, the surface color of the cells in the same batch of modules should be uniform, without obvious color difference, broken grid, defect damage, solder joint oxidation spots, etc.

Each string of cells and interconnection strips in the photovoltaic module are neatly welded and arranged without deviation, the spacing between the cell strings is uniform without obvious deviation, and there is no tin accumulation or oxidation on the surface of the welding strip. In addition, there are no bubbles or delamination in the sealing layer of the module, the layers are clear and transparent, and there is no dirt or mixed colors inside.

Aluminum frame of the module should be clean and free of corrosion spots, and the interface should be compact without obvious gaps, sharp edges or burrs. The edge sealing should be uniform without local glue accumulation.

Junction box is clearly marked, firmly bonded, and the buckles are intact and secure.

4.How to choose a high-quality photovoltaic module manufacturer?

1. High-quality photovoltaic module manufacturers can issue certification reports from independent laboratories and third-party certification and testing agencies.

2. When selecting modules, the module manufacturer should be a well-known brand in the industry.

3. Whether it has its own cell production plant and the quality of the cells is an important evaluation criterion.

4. Whether the photovoltaic manufacturer can provide EL photos and power test-related data reports with the modules can also be used as an important evaluation basis.
