How Can Energy Storage Be Categorized Based On Different End Customers?

January 21, 2025

Power-Side Energy Storage (Large-Scale Storage)
Power-side energy storage, also known as front-of-the-meter storage or large-scale storage, is primarily used by utility companies or large power generation enterprises. These systems are typically large in scale and serve purposes such as balancing grid supply and demand, improving grid stability, peak shaving, valley filling, and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the grid. Power-side energy storage systems often adopt mature and high-capacity storage technologies, such as pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage, and large-scale lithium-ion battery storage systems.

Application Scenarios:
Primarily used by large power generation enterprises or utility companies.
Serves purposes such as balancing grid supply and demand, improving grid stability, peak shaving, valley filling, and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the grid.
Often paired with wind and solar power generation to ensure stable power output and grid connection.

Grid-Side Energy Storage

Grid-side energy storage is also considered front-of-meter storage, but it is more focused on the needs of grid operators. These storage systems are primarily used for grid regulation, enhancing grid flexibility, and improving reliability. A grid-side energy storage system must feature large capacity, high efficiency, and quick response capabilities to ensure stable grid operation.

Application Scenarios:

Mainly serves grid operators.

Used for grid regulation, enhancing flexibility and reliability.

Provides additional power support during times of power supply-demand imbalance.

Acts as a backup power source in emergencies, ensuring the stability of the grid.

Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage
Behind-the-meter energy storage, also known as user-side energy storage, is primarily applied in industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. Depending on the specific application scenarios, user-side energy storage can be further categorized into commercial and industrial (C&I) storage and residential storage.

Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Energy Storage
Primarily applied in industrial parks, commercial centers, data centers, and other large-scale commercial or industrial facilities.

Optimizes energy management and enhances power supply stability to address power fluctuations.

Reduces energy costs by leveraging peak and off-peak electricity price differences.

Provides emergency power support during grid failures or outages.

Home Energy Storage

Primarily applied in residential homes or small commercial establishments.
Used to store electricity generated from solar photovoltaic panels or other renewable energy sources.
When grid failures occur or during peak electricity pricing periods, stored electricity is used.
Enhances the safety and stability of household electricity use.
Improves power quality by storing energy and providing power support during poor power quality conditions.
